HM Revenue and Customs are encouraging abuse of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme on their ‘Report fraud’ weblink.

They state that ‘If you are concerned that your employer is abusing the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme you should report them’.

So what types of abuse is this referring.

They state that ‘This could include your employer claiming on your behalf and:

  • not paying you what you are entitled to
  • being asked to do work while on furlough
  • making a backdated claim that includes times when you were working’

If you are furloughed you are not allowed to work for a minimum of 21 days. You cannot be asked to undertake work for that employment although you can complete training.
