It maybe feels like there shouldn’t be a lakh or hetsy about it!
HM Revenue and Customs is writing to 100,000 tax payers after detecting unauthorised access to online tax accounts.
These incidents are said to have involved criminals using personal information they had already obtained from external sources to impersonate tax payers and claim money from HMRC fraudulently.

They have taken action to protect customer data and secure affected accounts.
They say that no tax payer have experienced financial loss in relation to their tax affairs.
They indicate that they are working with law enforcement agencies in the UK and overseas to bring those responsible to justice.
Letters tell those contacted to show the tax agent a copy. Most of those impacted are unrepresented.

For those concerned email the HMRC fraud team at FraudPreventionCentre@hmrc.gov.uk
They can also call the online service desk on 03002003600 and select the option ‘unauthorised access of HMRC online accounts”.
