Kings Speech – employment rights and pensions

Amongst a long list of 40 government proposed bills (more even than Tony Blair’s government) as part of the Kings Speech held on Wednesday 17th July 2024, included was the the progression of a new bill to cover workers rights:

My Government is committed to making work pay and will legislate to introduce a new deal for working people to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights’ [Employment Rights Bill].

Make work pay

The Employment Rights Bill is indicated as a significant step towards delivering this Government’s plan to make work pay – the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation.

They will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts, end fire and rehire, and introduce basic employment rights from day one.

And through changes to the Low Pay Commission, ensure the minimum wage is a genuine living wage.

Pension Schemes Bill.

Continuing with pension dashboard initiatives, the Pension Scheme bill is to prevent people from losing track of pension pots and require pension schemes to offer retirement products. This is “so people have a pension and not just a savings pot when they stop work”.

When will we know more?

Detail will be provided when more information is released of what proposals are being progressed and when they may come into application.
